Why is Clarington undergoing a flurry of investment?
Welcome to 2019! The year is already off to a great start at the Clarington Board of Trade & Office of Economic Development.
While economic growth in the Clarington community has been strong and steady over the years, 2017 and 2018 have especially seen a flurry of investment. We expect 2019 will be no different. So, why so much activity? Why Clarington? Clarington offers what businesses and their employees are looking for: unique quality of life, affordability, and a progressive, engaged community.
Infrastructure development also helps to lay the foundation for confident investment. Clarington is home to four of the top 100 largest infrastructure projects in Canada. Over $14 billion is being invested, creating thousands of jobs. Projects currently underway are: Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington Nuclear Generation Station’s refurbishment which will extend station operations for 30 more years; Port Granby environmental remediation project; Highway 407 east extension to Highway 35/115; and the extension of the GO Train to Clarington.
A few investment highlights are: the construction of Toyota Canada’s Parts Distribution Centre which is well underway in east Bowmanville, projected to be in operation by Fall this year. As well, the cannabis industry is making a home in Clarington, with a primary focus on production and research & development. We also welcomed the newly constructed OWASCO RV Centre which opened in the Fall of 2018.
There is a lot more activity to come in 2019! Stay tuned. We are proud to not only support but be part of Clarington’s growth!
